Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders(GIFF)’s framework and elections

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) which was first named National Association of Custom House Agents (NACHA), is a nonprofit organization with a vision to facilitate Ghana’s international trade, by providing a body of professional freight forwarding agencies, committed to meeting every client’s needs.

It is governed by an Executive Council of 23 members comprising a President, 1st & 2nd Vice President, a Treasurer, the chairmen of the various district councils amongst others. It has a permanent Secretariat which is headed by an Executive Secretary.

The GIFF is made up of 6 districts in Tema, Kotoka International airport, Aflao, Sunyani, Takoradi and Elubo of which Tema is the largest. Each of these districts is run by an executive committee which is made up of the Chairman, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Assist Secretary and two (2) Executive members.

The District offices are located at the major entry points into the country, in order give the institute the capability to cover the whole logistics activities in the country. Districts are administered by the Executive Council through the District Committees. And the Chairman of the district is automatically part of the Council.

The District Committees organize members in the districts and oversee the general welfare and functions of the members. They also ensure members adhere to GIFF ‘s Operational Code of Conduct. The District Monitoring Committees are responsible for investigating adverse complaints brought by the public against members and recommend appropriate measures in each case. They constitute the Institute’s backbone for professional conduct of its members.

Elections are held every 2years for the various positions within the District Executive committees and National council. It is currently election season and so far, 4 out of the 6 districts in the country have gone to the polls to elect members of their District Committee.

The Tema District election will be coming off on Wednesday 20th October, 2021 while the Aflao District’s election date is still unknown. The Chairmanship position for the Tema District is being keenly contested by Forwarder Johnny Mantey and Mr. Eric Adiamah who have both been proven to be in good standing with the institute. Both parties have been through intense scrutiny and have been cleared of all petitions made against them. They have both used various mediums such interviews with Odomankoma Maritime News agency, posters, stickers etc to put their message across and now it is up to the members of the district to show up in their numbers, to vote for the candidate of their choice and this applies to all the other positions come October 20th, 2021.
